I'M K. JAYAPREETHI
I am an Award Winning Calligraphy & Engraving Artist, Educator and the Founder of Sol & Vervain. I serve and teach all things Calligraphy. Great meeting you and I’m excited to share with you everything about me and Sol & Vervain here.
Being specialized in modern brush calligraphy, traditional pointed pen calligraphy, monoline & faux calligraphy, calligraphing with ink-on-paper as well as lettering on surfaces beyond paper (think glass, wood, mirror, chalkboards, acrylic, anything!), both English and Tamil calligraphy with my legally copyright registered script style innovations, hand engraving, pyrography & gold foiling, product painting, digital iPad calligraphy, monogram creation, watercolour painting, large scale window murals and handlettering, I’m all set to work.
In my studio, we have experience working with clients such as luxury brands, corporates, weddings, events, celebrities, international clients, government collabs, conferences, exhibits and many individuals through our suite of on-site as well as in-studio services and we have taught calligraphy workshops to hundreds of students
I’m someone who was a science student in school, got graduated in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, got placed & worked in a corporate company after UG and even went on to pursue a Masters in Engineering at a reputed university only to realize that none of the above makes my heart sing. Because my he(art) beats ‘Calligraphy & Art’. More story? Let’s go.
Story Time
THE DAY I FELL HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE
As someone with a handwriting that looks like chicken scratch, I stumbled upon a calligraphy video one day that wowed me. As soon as I came to know that one’s handwriting is totally unrelated to and doesn’t matter for doing calligraphy, I obsessively started self-learning and practicing it. Yes, I fell in love with the artform. And to my surprise, I then happened to pick up my paint brushes after more than a decade sized gap before which I used to serial win drawing and painting competitions as an elementary kid. And this is how it all began.
THAT MOMENT WHEN THE DOTS CONNECTED
As a person who appreciates the value of handmade bespoke experiences and understands the importance of de-stressing oneself in this fast paced life, I realized that my love for calligraphy, painting, art, creating, performing, organizing, entrepreneurship and especially teaching can all wonderfully come together to benefit many. Dots can be connected only by looking backwards, right?
THE 2 FIRST TIME ENDEAVOURS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
I still remember the astounded smiles that bloomed on every guest’s face as they watched me calligraph and gift them a personalized name card keepsake when I performed my very first live event calligraphy at my cousin’s wedding mehandi function and I still remember how my students expressed their feedback on how energizing, relaxing, productive, creative and worthwhile their time spent with me was when I taught my very first calligraphy workshop. Soon after these two endeavors, I happily told myself to turn my passion into my full time profession.
Behind the name
SOL & VERVAIN
‘Sol’, the Latin name for sun which is the source of bright light and energy.
‘Vervain’ is a flower that represents enthusiasm and hard work which I believe are paramount in life.
Hence, the coined name that’s close to my heart, Sol & Vervain.
